Industry Workshop | Generating High-Quality Reference Genomes: Expert Assembly Tips from the Sanger Tree of Life

Monday, January 15, 2024 | 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Town & Country Resort, Pacific C
Drinks will be served

Arima Genomics Hi-C kits have powered a number of groundbreaking genome assembly programs supported by the Sanger Institute. These initiatives are charting new territory in biodiversity genomics, with the incredible goal of generating reference genomes for all 1.2 million eukaryotic species on Earth.

Register Below

In this workshop, hear from Dr. Kerstin Howe, Head of Production Genomics at the Tree of Life, and Dr. Jo Wood, Senior Scientific Manager at Sanger. They will share firsthand insights and lessons learned from their extensive experience in large-scale sequencing projects.

What You Will Learn

  • Best practices for genome assembly: Whether you’re working on one genome or many, learn about new genome assembly best practices that the Sanger team has improved upon over the last year
  • Streamlining the assembly workflow: Tackle common challenges and learn how to optimize processes for better efficiency and scalability in genome sequencing
  • Handling diverse input material: Learn about the range of protocols the Sanger team has developed to manage a wide range of genomic materials
  • Hi-C bioinformatics: Understand how Hi-C heatmaps are used for genome assembly curation and learn to interpret these complex data visualizations effectively

Meet the Speakers

Kai Kleiber, PhD

Arima Genomics

Kai received his PhD in molecular biology from Goethe University Frankfurt and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the cancer and stem cell program at Duke-NUS, Singapore. He is part of Arima's commercial team and has extensive experience in oncology, genome assembly, and epigenetics.

Kerstin Howe, PhD

Wellcome Sanger Institute

Kerstin is a computational biologist whose primary interest is in the provision of accurate reference genome sequences and structures to support biological, agricultural and clinical science. She leads the production of high quality reference genome assemblies in the Tree of Life Programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the largest contributor to the Earth BioGenome Project's moonshot at sequencing all eukaryotic life.

Jo Wood, PhD

Wellcome Sanger Institute

Jo is a computational biologist, who has worked in the field of genomics since the Human Genome Project. He leads a team of bioinformaticians dedicated to releasing high quality reference genome assemblies for the Tree of Life Programme and other collaborative initiatives under the Earth BioGenome Project.
